The skin is the largest organ we have, with a surface area of two square meters. Summer is a time that brings with it many skincare concerns. When aggravated, dry skin can lead to itching, rashes, cracking and in severe cases, even bleeding. If you think your skin is protected within the home because of air conditioners etc, you couldn’t be more wrong. Air conditioners further rob the air of moisture, as do cold showers or baths and harsh soaps and cleansers.

Acne, rashes, tanning, lacklustre skin are just a few of the woes that the skin faces in the summer. And the reasons for these issues range from environmental factors such as harsh sun, hot winds to even physiological factors such as lack of hydration, eating too much junk food and not keeping the skin clean. But if you want to really glow in the summers, despite rampant pollution, here are three dermatological treatments that can get the glow back onto your skin.

One word of caution – these treatments are medical procedures, and must be performed at the hands of a qualified and experienced dermatologist

1. Organic peels – that tap into the goodness of naturally occurring skin-friendly nutrients are really good. Vitamin C peel to get the glow back, mango pulp peel to exfoliate gently and papaya and pumpkin peels to cleanse and nourish are great. But make sure you get these done under the supervision of a qualified dermatologist.

2. Carbon Peel – is a popular treatment in the West and because it gives instant glow to the skin, it is ideal to take this treatment once in 40 days in the summers. In this treatment, which is a specialised dermatological procedure, carbon is applied to the skin. After that, gentle laser is applied, which bursts these carbon particles, gently peeling the skin’s outermost layer. This not only removes pigmentation and blemishes, but also bleaches the fine hair to reveal glowing skin instantly. But since this is a specialised medical facial treatment, make sure it is administered by a qualified dermatologist. Do follow it up after two months for the maximum benefits.

3. Skin Whitening Treatment –

The colour of a person’s skin is determined by the quantity of melanin pigment present in the skin. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes. The amount of melanin pigment also depends upon the genetic makeup of a person, exposure to the sun, exposure to chemicals and pollutants and degree of damage to the skin.

Skin whitening treatment works by reducing the amount of melanin in the skin. It also helps in dealing with problems of acne, freckles, scars, age spots and moles. There are four different ways in which skin whitening can be done – Topical, oral, injections and laser treatment. Topical treatment makes use of serums and creams that work on the epidermal layer of the skin, so the results are short-termed. Oral medications are mainly glutathione based and it dissolves in the blood stream. The injectibles are mainly acid based that reach the blood stream directly and bring changes from within the body. Laser treatment breaks down the melanin and works on the tissues for skin healing. The last two treatments are more effective as they last longer than the rest. These two methods just require booster doses to maintain the effect in the long term. Laser treatment reduces pigmentation, giving the skin that instant glow and even tone.

For gaining maximum benefit out of any treatment, it is best to seek advice from the most credible source. Seek help from the best dermatologist in town, take the suggestions for your skin treatment based on your skin type and be clear as to what you want, just an instant facial or a long term glowing smooth skin. Discuss in detail about any other problem that you might have.
