Emotional Intelligence

Raise Emotional Intelligence: Brief Guide| Pragya Chandak

‘Emotions over Intelligence’, we will now put light on the most effective techniques and tools to help our children to recognize and identify their feelings and emotions. Recently, the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence brooded a program and named it ‘RULER’ to serve the above-mentioned purpose. The program is an acronym for the following prioritized elements:-

Recognizing feelings within self and others – meaning developing awareness about self and
how others behave.

Understanding the effects and causes of emotions – meaning understanding which events lead to what emotions and what consequences thus arise.

Labeling emotions correctly – meaning tagging emotions accurately and knowing differences
between various types of emotions that could easily be perplexing.

Expressing emotions – meaning exercising timely expression of emotions.

Regulating emotions – meaning understanding how emotions should be controlled and
responded to.

As per the study, at any age, all these five elements to develop and regulate Emotional Intelligence can be taught and learned. The program has had proven success in boosting academic performance and productivity while diminishing episodes and levels of anxiety and depression. Beyond this program, another tool is building mindfulness by incorporating Yoga exercises that are known to increase capacity for regulating emotions.

To initiate RULER in your homely space and to develop mindfulness, the best way is to encourage and throw open dialogue to children, about their daily feelings. Next step is to help them to name their feelings for smooth management so that children needn’t go through uneasy processes of explanation of the common feelings, every time.

Emotion management is a life-long process. The least we can do as guardians is to set an example for our generation, to not rush on, sweep and depress the emotions under the rug but to deal with them with endurance, patience and ultimately use emotions for our own healthier causes.
