Dark Circles

Under eye dark circles is a girl’s biggest nightmare. It is definitely not easy to get rid of them, but hey, it is not impossible either. First of all, you must know that you are not alone, and there are so many others who suffer from this issue, and perpetually look as if they have been punched in the eye.

Dr Sruthi Gondi, Dermatologist and Founder and MD, Science of Skin Clinic, Hyderabad, advises on undereye circles. She believes that the main cause of dark circles is genetics and skin tone. The under-eye area can look purple or bluish because the skin there is so thin and translucent that you can easily see the underlying veins. It can be more apparent in people with fair skin, and those with very little subcutaneous fat supporting the area under the lower lid. Lack of sleep increases venous congestion; fluid build-up leads to pooled blood in those superficial blood vessels, making dark circles look even darker when you’re tired. Some people, especially those with darker skin tones, produce extra pigment around the eye area, which can cause a general darkening of the skin under the eyes and on the lids.

It is recommended to use creams and serums with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and peptides to hydrate and stimulate collagen and elastin production, plumping up the skin and pushing it away from the pooled blood. Antioxidants including vitamins A, C, and E can help to lighten dark under-eye circles. Filler injections and laser treatments are other techniques used.

A lot of people try home remedies as well, such as putting soaked tea bags on your eyes or putting vegetable slices on the eye such as cucumber, tomato and potato. Oils such as tea tree oil and coconut oil are considered effective as well. Milk and lemon juice are considered great ingredients for skin lightening under the eye. Aloe Vera fresh gel from the Aloe Vera plant, when applied on the under eye skin area, works wonders too. One should take care of these liquid forms do not go inside the eye, as it may lead to irritation in the eyes.

Use a good and gentle makeup remover. Undereye skin is among the thinnest on the body, so any trauma or irritation can cause skin inflammation. If you are using a towelette, try one that is fragrance-free, and take gentle strokes in a single direction rather than rubbing back and forth.

Do not forget to wear your sunscreen. Invest in a broad-spectrum physical sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Ingredients such as vitamin C and kojic acid help decrease skin pigmentation over time, ultimately resulting in the lightening of the dark circles.

The most important aspect which can cause undereye circles is lack of sleep. One should ensure they get a good sound sleep of at least seven to eight hours. Following a well-balanced diet and controlling sugar and carbs intake has proven effective to reduce under eye circles.
